The Planting of the First Black Church in the United Church of Christ Southwest Conference

In August 2022, Rev. Dr. Myra Taylor and her husband, Deacon David, embarked on a transformative journey, relocating from Chicago, Illinois to Phoenix, Arizona. Their mission was to establish a new spiritual home and community in the Southwest Conference of the United Church of Christ (UCC). This initiative marked the founding of New Hope United Church of Christ of Phoenix, the first Black UCC church within the Southwest Conference. Pastor Myra is the first Black female Senior Pastor to plant, a significant milestone for the conference.

Motivated by a deep sense of calling and guided by faith, Pastor Taylor and David sought to create an inclusive and vibrant congregation that honors Black heritage while embodying the UCC’s commitment to justice, equality, and love. New Hope UCC of Phoenix launched its first service on Palm Sunday, April 2, 2023. Through dedicated outreach, prayer, and service, the church quickly began to form a foundation, welcoming individuals seeking a spiritual home and a sense of community.

Our new church plant stands as a testament to Pastor Taylor's visionary leadership and the couple's devotion to fostering unity, empowerment, and faith in the Southwest Conference.
